January 31, 2018
As we hit the halfway point of the year, I think it is important to reflect on the incredible opportunities that are occurring in our Maple Leaf system.
We continue to make efforts toward attracting new teachers, putting in place appropriate supports and professional opportunities and then working to retain teachers within our system.
I want to take this opportunity to connect as you prepare to wrap up your teaching and get ready to celebrate the Chinese New Year which for many, involves travel and adventure with friends and families. For those of you returning to your home countries, we wish you well as you connect with your families. For those taking on another adventure and heading off to exotic and interesting destinations …..hang on to your passports and enjoy the experiences! Also, get ready to share your holiday photos with Madison McLeod at our Vancouver office for the February photo contest.
Before we leave, I want to make you all aware of some opportunities for next year. Our predicted retention rate of teachers, based on the preliminary intent forms that you submitted to your school admin, shows over 77% of our teachers and admin planning to return to Maple Leaf next year. This includes 20 teachers who requested a transfer to another Maple Leaf campus for next year. Currently, transfer letters are being sent to all applicants to let them know if we have been able to approve the moves.
Two new opportunities exist for September 2018.
You are encouraged to think of rounding out your Chinese experience through employment at a second MLES school. I encourage you to think of these four schools as we extend the deadline for transfers to these locations to March 16th. A second MLES school experience helps to ensure a diverse background on your resume. Maple Leaf pays for moving expenses up to 6000 RMB, plus flights and accommodation for two days so that you can visit the campus, meet the administration and staff and look for housing prior to your move. If you are interested in taking advantage of this great opportunity and have questions, you may speak directly with your principal or respond to me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Those wishing to express their interest in the opportunities at any of these four schools should complete the form attached and return it to email@example.com as soon as possible. It would be our hope that all teachers at these schools come from our current, experienced Maple Leaf staff and These transfer decisions will be made within the first two weeks of March 2018.
Dalian has been host to the newest program in Maple Leafs history, the Zhou Enlai Scholarship Class. This new group of Grade 10 students who, through an extensive application process, were admitted to this class to work toward meeting entrance criteria for seven top universities that include Harvard, Yale, Princeton Stanford, MIT, Oxford, and Cambridge. The applicants for this class included some Maple Leaf Grade 9 students as well as strong candidates from across China. They entered Summer School last August 2017 and completed Math 10 and Pre-Calculus 11 and then entered into Pre-Calculus 12 in September. The goal is to have them complete their Grade 12 academic classes and 5 AP courses by the end of the 2018-2019 school year so that they can have strong applications to present to these institutions in October of 2019. These students are being sponsored for their tuition by the newly established Sherman Jen Educational Foundation. Their study in these seven universities will similarly be supported by the Foundation for the duration of their studies. The second cohort of the Zhou Enlai Grade 10 students will begin in March 2018 as this program now converts to a semester of pre-study in Grade 10 courses followed by three years of extensive academic rigor.
We are looking for applicants from all Maple Leaf campuses for teaching opportunities within this program. A posting has been attached to this e-mail as well. A strong academic background, including preferably a Masters degree in an academic discipline as well as previous experience and certification to teach AP courses or a willingness to be involved in receiving AP training prior to September, 2018. This advertisement will also go out on all recruiting sites in North America, but we hope to first capitalize on the strength of current Maple Leaf teachers already employed at our schools. If you would like more information, please e-mail me at: firstname.lastname@example.org.
These opportunities would be considered as a part of our transfer program and the moving costs and associated travel would be covered for teachers accepted into roles at these schools.
In addition, information about teaching vacancies at MLIS-TRU and MLIS-KPU, our two Canadian schools, will be circulated once the enrolment predictions have been calculated for the next school year.
Maple Leaf owner and CEO, Dr. Sherman Jen, announced on Saturday, January 27, that the Stock Shares Incentive Program would be extended for another 3 years. This will be of direct benefit to those teachers in their first and second years as well as those few remaining teachers with more experience who have yet to apply for this program. It will also impact the new teachers hired this year as they will qualify in their third teaching year for participation in the new program.
Since the program began in the 2015-2016 school year, 164 British Columbia certified teachers and Foreign ESL teachers have received shares. This year, there were more applications than in the previous two years with 115 eligible candidates making application. In May of this year the first, second and third shares distributions will take place. Overall, 279 BC Certified and Foreign ESL teachers have made application to this program and have benefitted from this generous opportunity. It is Dr. Jens vision to acknowledge the significant contributions of both the Chinese and Foreign employees to Maple Leaf as it is these contributions that have helped make our students successful, and ultimately, increased the brand value of Maple Leaf as a result. As of May 2017, there were 633 Chinese and foreign employees who were share holders in Maple Leaf. It is the intent of Dr. Jen to increase this number to well over 1000. It is this target that has resulted in the continuation of the program for another 3 years.
Teachers and employees who were awarded shares in the first year will now be eligible next year to re-apply to the program. More information will be sent to all staff once it becomes available.
This program is significant in that no other international school or BC Offshore school offers a year end bonus that has the ability to gain value over time! Dr. Jen is to be commended for his vision and efforts with this program.
Each year we have a number of students from Maple Leaf schools aspiring to make application to Oxford University. These students require the support of Maple Leaf staff and teachers to prepare for a number of elements in the entrance interview process. There will be a maximum of 20 applicants that may represent all campuses. They will begin their preparation in March and will make application in the Autumn and be interviewed in October/November. We would like to invite Expressions of Interest from teachers who would like to be involved in the following:
Assisting students preparing their personal statements. This requires a background in English and involves working with the students and providing feedback to create strong personal statements and then assisting with their editing.
Math, Physics, Chemistry and Biology subject area support. The exams that will be written are based on the UK A level curriculum, not the BC curriculum. Teachers with a background in one of these areas will be required to analyze the A level curriculum and then provide tutorial support for students to fill in the academic gaps to prepare them to write the exams required for entrance.
Compensation for these roles will be determined based on case loads once student applications have been received. Please send your Expression of Interest emails to email@example.com by March 16.
Maple Leaf has been a partner with Royal Roads University for 4 years and currently 25 Chinese, international ESL and BC teachers and admin are enrolled in the second 2-year cohort of the Master of Arts in Educational Leadership and Management. This is a bilingual program open to all Maple Leaf employees. Entry into the third cohort will be made available in the autumn. The program will likely hold its first residency in Dalian in the February Spring Festival holiday, 2019.
A second partnership has been established with Lakehead University for a Masters in Curriculum. This program will start registration in the autumn as well and will start with online courses and the first residency in China during the May holiday, 2019. This program is contingent upon establishing a cohort of 10-15 Maple Leaf teachers and leaders. There will an information session for interested teachers scheduled in early March via video conference to receive information about the program.
For Maple Leaf employees who enroll in and successfully complete these programs, 50% of the tuition costs will be reimbursed, 1/3 per year for 3 years for those teachers staying with Maple Leaf. The principal at each school will have the information to share with staff after the February Spring Festival holiday for this great professional opportunity!
Our recruiters are currently working to hire the teachers we will need for next school year. We have always had great success in hiring teachers who have a connection with a current teacher in China. You are encouraged to share your stories with your friends and former classmates. You are our best recruiters! In recognition of this, for each teacher you refer who signs on to teach with Maple Leaf, you will receive the $500 referral fee. Last year, 30% of our hiring came directly from referrals from our current staff. You are also encouraged to connect with and share our social media sites. Visit these at http://www.mapleleafschools.com/employment/social-media/follow-us/.
