Mr. Sherman Jen was born and raised in China, and lived and worked in Hong Kong and Vancouver, Canada. While living in Canada, Mr. Jen developed the idea of an educational system that would blend the best of the educational model he saw in Canada with the strengths and cultural richness that exist in the Chinese educational system. With this idea in mind he returned to China in 1994 and establish his first school in Dalian, Liaoning Province in 1995.
During the early years, Mr. Jen was not only the CEO and Chairman of MLES, he was also the Headmaster of the high school in Dalian. He recognized very early on that successful English language learning would be essential to academic success in the BC graduation program. The Maple Leaf ESL system was developed from this realization, and stands today as a model for the teaching of English in China using western methodologies that result in the ability to think and learn in English.
Since 1999, thousands of students have graduated from MLES schools with the BC Dogwood Graduation Diploma and the Chinese High School Diploma. Many of these students have now completed Bachelor’s and Masters Degrees and several are working on PhD’s. Their success and their contributions began with their experiences at a Maple Leaf International School. This is the success of MLES, and the legacy of Sherman Jen.
The philosophy of blending the best of eastern and western educational practices remains at the heart of an MLES education. It is this vision that has lead to the success and continuing growth and expansion of the Maple Leaf Educational System.
In June 2013 Sherman Jen was honoured by Royal Roads University, Victoria, BC, Canada with the conferring of an Honorary Doctorate of Laws degree. The full text of Dr. Jen’s speech on that occasion can be read here.
