Special Features/Events

One of Maple Leaf’s goals is to provide children and their families with a sense of belonging to a school community. Meet the Teacher Night, the Public Speaking competition, Senior Science Fair, and Coffee with the Principal are opportunities offered to provide more understanding of the British Columbia curriculum and to encourage dialogue between staff and parents. Parent volunteers are also a welcome addition to our school and provide valuable assistance by listening to children read, and helping with library, clubs and other extra-curricular activities.

Cross grade activities (e.g. clubs or buddy classes), and assisting in the school library, promote the understanding that we are responsible for each other and for making the school a welcoming environment for all. Student council also organizes regular events such as our Annual Terry Fox Run, as well as twin day, pajama day and other fundraisers to support a needy village school in rural Liaoning. Basketball, hockey and other sport activities encourage a cooperative, positive school atmosphere. Music activities also embrace these perspectives. For example, our Holiday Concerts brought parents, staff and students together to sing and share season’s greetings.

Presenting Assemblies

Presenting Assemblies are held regularly to showcase classes and groups performing for the rest of the school. Student MC’s lead the assembly where songs, dances, artwork, writing and individual special talents are shared. Parents enjoy coming and being a part of our audience.

Student Led Conferences

During Student Lead Conferences this spring, the children proudly shared their work with their parents. By leading the conference, the student becomes an active participant in identifying their own strengths, accomplishments and areas for growth.

Professional Development Afternoons

We know that when teachers work together on common goals in concrete and specific ways, student learning is enhanced. This year, during our professional development afternoons, we have been focusing on strategies to meet the individual learning needs of students within a class. We have been expanding our Teaching Assistant program and generating resources for both ESL students in the classroom and also enrichment programs for students that are already very successful.
